Spain Launches Joint Deposit Limits for Online Gambling.

Spain has introduced a joint deposit limit system that tracks players’ deposits across all licensed online gambling operators. The system was launched on 21 October 2026 by the Ministry of Social Rights, Consumer Affairs and 2030 Agenda through the Directorate General for Gambling Regulation (DGOJ).

The launch also included a new Player Portal, which allows users to view their gambling activity across different licensed operators in one place. The system is currently in a testing phase and is scheduled to become fully operational in March 2027.

How Spain’s Joint Deposit Limits Work

Previously, each licensed operator managed deposit limits separately. This allowed players with multiple accounts to deposit more money overall by spreading their activity across different platforms.

Under Royal Decree 520/2026, the DGOJ now tracks deposits across all a player’s accounts in real time. Once the combined deposits reach the applicable limit, operators must stop accepting further deposits and explain the restriction to the player.

The new system supplements existing deposit limits set by individual operators. All players are assigned the same default joint limits.

PeriodDefault joint limit
Daily€700
Weekly€1,750
Four weeks€3,300

The daily limit runs from 06:00 to 06:00 the following day. The weekly period runs from 06:00 on Tuesday to 06:00 the following Tuesday. The four-week limit covers four consecutive weeks, beginning at 06:00 on a Tuesday.

Rules for Changing Deposit Limits

Players can reduce, increase or remove their joint deposit limits, subject to specific conditions.

Reducing a limit takes effect immediately. However, increasing or removing one requires a waiting period of three working days. According to the ministry, this delay is intended to prevent impulsive decisions.

After increasing a limit, players must wait three months before requesting another increase or removal. They must also receive information about gambling risks before making either change.

New Player Portal Offers Greater Transparency

The Player Portal brings together gambling information previously held across separate operator accounts. Access is free through Spain’s Cl@ve digital identity system. Users can log in even if they do not have a gambling account.

The portal allows players to review deposits, stakes, winnings and losses, alongside historical activity and aggregated statistics. Users can also check accounts registered in their names to identify potential identity theft.

Additional features include custom alerts for spending and gambling activity. Players can manage their joint deposit limits, verify whether operators have applied changes and download annual activity certificates.

The ministry said the platform aims to help players better understand and control their gambling habits by providing easier access to information about their activity.

Impact on Players and Gambling Operators

According to the ministry, the new rules are expected to benefit players who gamble across multiple operators. This group represents approximately one-third of active online gamblers in Spain.

The decree also states that players using two operators form the largest group among those affected. It further indicates that around 80% of accumulated losses are concentrated among 10% of players.

However, Jdigital, the trade association representing Spain’s licensed online gambling operators, has questioned whether the measure is proportionate. The organisation cited DGOJ data indicating that approximately 80% of online players use a single operator.

For operators, implementation requires connecting their deposit systems to the DGOJ’s central platform. They must check the system before accepting deposits and explain the joint limits in the safer gambling sections of their websites.

The DGOJ will be the only authority able to access the combined deposit data. According to the ministry, this arrangement limits unnecessary information sharing between operators while protecting players’ personal data.

When Will the System Become Fully Operational?

Spain’s joint deposit limit system is currently undergoing testing, although the Player Portal is already available to users.

The system is scheduled to come fully into force in March 2027. The decree’s provisions take effect nine months after its publication in Spain’s Official State Gazette on 25 June 2026. The gazette lists 25 March 2027 as the effective date.
