VNLOK Meta Lawsuit Over Illegal Gambling Ads.

The VNLOK Meta lawsuit concerns illegal gambling advertisements appearing on Facebook and Instagram in the Netherlands. The Dutch Online Gambling Operators Association (VNLOK) has taken legal action against Meta. The association has also filed a complaint with the European Commission.

VNLOK says its investigation identified more than 70,000 gambling-related advertisements during the final quarter of 2025. The association says most of these advertisements came from gambling operators without a Dutch licence. It argues that these ads can expose Dutch consumers to unlicensed gambling services.

The case also focuses on Meta’s responsibilities under the European Union’s Digital Services Act. Meta operates Facebook and Instagram as Very Large Online Platforms. VNLOK argues that Meta should take stronger measures to detect and remove illegal gambling advertising.

Dutch gambling operators with licences face strict advertising rules. They also operate under regulatory requirements designed to protect consumers. VNLOK says illegal operators can avoid some of these restrictions by promoting their services through major social media platforms.

The VNLOK Meta lawsuit could bring further attention to the role of social media companies in controlling illegal gambling advertisements. The Amsterdam District Court will consider the legal action. VNLOK has also asked the European Commission to examine the matter under European digital rules.

The dispute comes as Dutch authorities continue efforts to direct consumers toward licensed gambling services. The case highlights the challenges of monitoring online advertising. Gambling advertisements can appear quickly and reach large audiences through social media platforms.

VNLOK wants Meta to strengthen its measures against illegal gambling advertising. The association says stronger enforcement would help protect consumers and support compliance with Dutch gambling rules. Meta’s response and the court proceedings will determine how the dispute develops.
