France’s Online Sports Betting Market Grows 12% as Niche Sports Gain Ground.

The France online sports betting market recorded significant growth in 2025, with total wagers reaching €11.5 billion, a 12% increase year-on-year, according to figures from the National Gaming Authority (ANJ). The regulator also highlighted increased player engagement and growing activity in niche sports, raising concerns about gambling-related risks among highly engaged bettors.

France’s Sports Betting Market in 2025

Total sports betting wagers increased by 12% year-on-year to €11.5 billion, while gross gaming revenue (GGR) rose by 10.4% to €1.77 billion.

The number of active betting accounts grew by 7.9% to 5.27 million, while the number of unique players increased by 8.6% to 3.65 million. Average annual stakes per bettor reached €3,159, representing a 25% increase compared with 2020.

Football Leads as Tennis Betting Expands

Football remained France’s largest online sports betting category, accounting for 54.9% of total stakes. Its performance benefited from a broader sporting calendar and major tournaments throughout the year.

Tennis also recorded substantial growth, with stakes rising by 16% and accounting for 23% of total betting activity. The figures highlight the continued importance of established sports while demonstrating growing demand across different betting categories.

ANJ Raises Concerns Over Niche Sports Betting

Despite the market’s expansion, the ANJ identified increased activity in niche sports as an area requiring attention. According to the regulator, these markets can attract a disproportionate share of high-risk or highly engaged bettors, with fewer casual players participating.

The concentration of betting activity among these players raises concerns about gambling-related harm and the need for effective monitoring and responsible gambling measures.

Operators Spend €180 Million on Player Incentives

Licensed operators distributed approximately €180 million in financial incentives during 2025, with most of the spending directed towards retention bonuses designed to encourage continued player activity.

The figures underline the competitive nature of France’s regulated betting market, where operators use promotional incentives to retain customers as participation and spending increase.

France’s 2025 results demonstrate the continued expansion of regulated online sports betting. However, the ANJ’s findings suggest that rising stakes, stronger player engagement and the growth of niche sports will remain important considerations for regulators seeking to balance market development with player protection.
