ACMA Bans Six Online Gambling Sites for Non-Compliance with Regulations

Australia’s communications regulator, ACMA, has directed internet service providers to block six more websites accused of violating the Interactive Gambling Act 2001, in an ongoing effort to combat illegal online gambling. The Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) identified the newly restricted sites as Play Jonny, ACO96, TCL99, Waboom77, Wonaco, and WooSpin. These platforms are alleged to operate in breach of Australian law, which is part of a broader crackdown on offshore operators offering unlicensed services without the necessary protections under Australian rules. Following investigations into these sites, ACMA requested that ISPs block access to them. Website blocking remains a key enforcement tool alongside other measures, aimed at limiting the reach of unlicensed gambling services and related affiliates. ISPs have been instructed to implement these blocks promptly to prevent Australian consumers from accessing potentially illegal gambling platforms.

Since ACMA’s first blocking request in November 2019, a total of 1,708 illegal gambling and affiliate websites have been blocked. Additionally, over 230 illegal services have voluntarily exited the Australian market since ACMA began enforcing updated regulations in 2017. The regulator continues to monitor the online gambling landscape, actively investigating and acting against new offenders.

ACMA warns that illegal gambling sites can sometimes appear legitimate but often lack the basic safeguards needed to protect consumers, increasing the risk of financial loss. Australians are encouraged to verify the licensing status of operators through ACMA’s public register and to follow guidance on how to identify illegal services and file complaints on the regulator’s website. It is always advisable to check an operator’s license before placing any bets.

This enforcement action is carried out under the authority of the Interactive Gambling Act 2001, which governs online wagering services offered into Australia. ACMA investigates suspected breaches and publicly publishes enforcement data to support compliance efforts. Operators found in breach of the law face penalties and other legal consequences.
