Hungary’s Gambling Industry Sees Leadership Shift with Guller

Hungary’s Ministry of National Economy revealed that Zoltán Guller will take over from Andrea Mager as the CEO of Szerencsejáték Zrt, the country’s state-run sports betting and lottery monopoly. This change comes as part of a broader restructuring of Hungary’s senior government and agency leadership, directed by Prime Minister Viktor Orbán. Hungary’s Gambling Industry

The reshuffle prompted Mager to step down as CEO of Szerencsejáték Zrt last week. She was appointed by Orbán to join the National Bank of Hungary (MNB), marking a significant shift in her career. Her resignation paved the way for Guller’s appointment to lead the gambling monopoly.

As part of the reorganization, Orbán moved oversight of Szerencsejáték Zrt from the National Concession Office to the Ministry of National Economy. The ministry is now under the leadership of Márton Nagy, a newly appointed secretary who selected Guller for the CEO position earlier this week.

Nagy outlined his expectations for Guller, stating: “The Minister of National Economy expects Zoltán Guller to ensure the 21st-century-level fulfilment of the Hungarian population’s gaming experience needs, enhance customer experience, and create social value through cost-effective management and continuous product and service development.”

Guller assumes the role with a wealth of experience from prior state positions, including his tenure as CEO of the Digital Hungary Agency until November 2024. He will continue to serve as chairman of the Hungarian Tourism Agency (MTÜ) while leading Szerencsejáték Zrt.

The changes at Szerencsejáték Zrt are drawing attention in 2025, as Hungary awaits clarity on whether Orbán’s government will initiate a new tender for the monopoly. The last such tender occurred in 2011, making this a focal point for observers of Hungary’s gambling sector. Hungary’s Gambling Industry
