NPP’s Bawumia Promises to Abolish 10% VAT on Betting to Ease Economic Burden

A Deputy National Communications Director of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mr. George Krobea Asante, has announced that the next government under Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia intends to abolish the 10% Value-Added Tax (VAT) on betting.

This measure is designed to alleviate the economic strain on the youth while bolstering the economy.

The Ghana Revenue Authority implemented the 10% tax on betting, games, and lottery winnings in 2023, leading to significant protests among young people. Many argued that, given the limited job opportunities, betting has become a vital source of income, and imposing a tax on it would exacerbate their financial difficulties.

Mr. Krobea Asante highlighted that the NPP’s flagbearer, Dr. Bawumia, is devoted to reducing the financial burdens on Ghanaians by eliminating several taxes, including those on betting, electricity, and spare parts. He contends that these initiatives will greatly enhance the living standards of the populace.

He urged Ghanaians to rally behind Dr. Bawumia in the forthcoming elections, emphasizing his proven ability in economic management and a concrete vision for the country’s future. He drew a contrast with former President John Mahama’s tenure, claiming it failed to effectively tackle the nation’s economic issues.

According to Krobea Asante, Dr. Bawumia is the best choice for fostering economic growth and improving the lives of Ghanaians. He made these remarks during an interview on Accra-based Happy FM.
