Sweden Sees Decline in Suspected Match-Fixing Incidents in 2025

Swedish gambling authorities observed a notable reduction in suspected match-fixing cases during 2025, reflecting a positive trend compared to previous years. The data encompasses reports submitted by integrity agencies and licensed betting operators, as well as supervisory activities conducted during major sporting events. In 2025, Spelinspektionen, Sweden’s gambling regulator, received only two reports of suspected match-fixing from its partner integrity organizations. This marks a decline from five reports in 2024 and twelve in 2023, suggesting a consistent downward trajectory over the past three years. Since the summer of 2024, licensed gambling operators in Sweden have been mandated to report suspected match-fixing immediately to Spelinspektionen. During 2025, the regulator received four such reports from license holders. Notably, one of these reports concerned the same suspicion already flagged by an integrity organization. As this reporting requirement is relatively new, there are no comparable figures from earlier years.

Throughout 2025, Spelinspektionen conducted comprehensive supervisory reviews of all licensed operators, emphasizing their procedures for detecting and preventing match-fixing activities. The authority also participated in monitoring efforts during the UEFA Women’s European Championship held in Switzerland. This initiative focused on risk assessments and preventive measures to combat manipulation and match-fixing. No incidents were identified during the tournament.

Commenting on these developments, Samuel Wahlberg, the coordinator against match-fixing at Spelinspektionen, stated:

“The work against match-fixing has functioned well over the past year, and cooperation with crime prevention authorities, the sports movement, and the gambling industry within the Match-Fixing Council has been effective. We view the downward trend positively, but the work to prevent and detect manipulation continues. Match-fixers’ methods can be sophisticated, and we cannot be certain that all manipulation is detected.” Sweden Match-Fixing Decline
