Denmark Sees Growth in Online Gambling as Market Expands in 2025

In March 2025, Denmark experienced a 1.4% rise in overall gambling expenditure compared to the same month in 2024, with online casino revenue leading the growth.

The latest figures from the Danish Gambling Authority, known as Spillemyndigheden, reveal that online casinos saw a 6.4% increase year-on-year, maintaining a steady upward trend in recent months. Meanwhile, other sectors such as betting, gaming machines, and land-based casinos faced slight declines, reflecting a broader shift towards digital platforms within the country’s gambling landscape.

The March report also introduces a new category: land-based bingo. This addition follows recent regulatory amendments effective from January 1, 2025. Under Denmark’s liberalised market framework, licensed operators are now allowed to offer bingo on commercial terms, marking a significant development in the industry. It is important to note that charitable bingo operations continue to be categorized separately under the lottery segment. Denmark Spillemyndigheden Gambling

Beyond monthly statistics, Spillemyndigheden recently published its annual overview titled The Gambling Market in Numbers 2024. This report highlights that total gambling expenditure in Denmark reached DKK 11.0 billion (approximately $1.6 billion) in 2024, representing a 5.6% increase from the previous year. The online gambling sector has gained a larger share of this market, with the channelisation rate—the percentage of gambling activity conducted through licensed operators—rising to 91.5% in 2024, up from 90.8% in 2023. Currently, Denmark ranks fifth globally in terms of regulated online gambling market share.

The report also sheds light on betting patterns during major sporting events, such as UEFA Men’s Euro 2024. Notably, stakes increased significantly when Denmark participated in the tournament. Additionally, responsible gambling initiatives continue to play a vital role, with measures like the ROFUS self-exclusion register and the StopSpillet support helpline being highlighted in the report.

Earlier this year, Denmark implemented new licensing requirements for game suppliers, which became mandatory by July 2025. In terms of revenue, the country’s gross gaming revenue in 2024 reached DKK 7.27 billion, with online casino contributing nearly half of this sum. Gaming machines, however, stood out as the only major vertical to experience a decline in overall performance for the year. Denmark Spillemyndigheden Gambling
