Dutch Regulator Prohibits Influencers from Promoting Gambling Ads

The Dutch Gambling Authority has recently provided further clarification on its restrictions regarding role models in gambling advertising. The regulator reaffirmed that influencers, streamers, and other online personalities are included within the scope of the ban. The Kansspelautoriteit (Ksa) has issued updated guidance to illustrate how the role model ban should be implemented. The rules specifically target advertising related to licensed online gambling services, with the goal of minimizing gambling exposure among vulnerable groups, particularly young adults. This move came after the regulator observed some confusion among license holders. Certain operators were unsure whether specific individuals qualified as role models. The new guidance aims to eliminate this ambiguity and establish clear directives.
The Ksa has made it clear that influencers, streamers, and similar online personalities are included under the ban. These figures often have large young followings, making their involvement in gambling advertising problematic due to their influence. The regulator emphasized that because young audiences may identify with these personalities, their promotion of gambling poses additional risks. Consequently, operators are instructed to review their marketing arrangements and immediately terminate any partnerships that violate these restrictions.

Importantly, the ban isn’t limited to household names. It also applies to individuals with significant online visibility, such as bloggers, vloggers, and streamers.
