Betfred to Suspend Irish Operations and Exit Market by June 30

Betfred has announced that it will suspend its operations in Ireland starting from 30 June, as the country prepares to implement its new gambling licensing framework on 1 July. Customers in Ireland are advised to withdraw their funds and refrain from placing bets that are due to settle after 29 June.

The company has not indicated when it plans to resume its services in Ireland. The decision to pause operations aligns with the requirements of the Gambling Regulation Act 2024, which introduces a new licensing regime overseen by the Gambling Regulatory Authority of Ireland (GRAI).

In a message to customers, Betfred confirmed that account access will be discontinued from late June. Customers are urged to withdraw any remaining balances before the suspension takes effect.
Attention has been drawn to ongoing bets, including those placed on the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which commenced last week and runs until 19 July. According to the Racing Post, bets already placed on the tournament are expected to be settled as usual, despite the temporary halt in operations.

Betfred described the suspension as a temporary measure and expressed hope to resume operations soon. When asked for further details, the company reiterated its position and stated that no additional information would be provided at this time.
The timing of the suspension coincides with the imminent implementation of Ireland’s updated regulatory framework. From 1 July, online and digital gambling operators will be able to hold licenses under the new system.

The Gambling Regulation Act 2024 marks a significant overhaul of Ireland’s gambling laws. Beginning on 1 July, this legislation replaces decades-old regulations with a unified licensing system. The responsibility for licensing now resides with the newly established Gambling Regulatory Authority of Ireland, which has been authorized to begin issuing licenses since February, ahead of the official start date.
