The Department of Internal Affairs is reaching out to potential operators, encouraging them to participate in shaping the future of online gambling regulation. Trina Lowry, leading the Online Gambling Implementation Programme, highlighted the importance of early engagement: “If you’re an online casino operator eyeing the New Zealand market, the best thing you can do right now is to register your interest.”
Lowry also underscored the collaborative nature of this process, stating: “As we develop the licensing system, we want it to be straightforward, efficient, and supportive of operators. Your insights on what information would be most useful, as well as your experiences and expectations, will be invaluable to us.”
Licensing will be awarded through a competitive application process, with applicants needing to meet specific regulatory standards. The objective is to establish a well-regulated environment that ensures responsible gambling and consumer protection, fostering trust and integrity within the online casino landscape.

Current legislation under the Gambling Act 2003 bans online casino advertising, but upcoming legislation aims to change that.
